Kyoto Festival

We took several trains to get from Aoshima to Kyoto. Charles and I shared a bento, and he had a drink. Yes the name of the drink is Pocari Sweat and no, I don't know what a pocari looks like or why its sweat is so delicious.

The hotel was quite busy.

Hiromi wanted us to see one of the three biggest festivals in Japan, and we were there the last night before the floats began to move about the city, which was the next day.

The place was packed!

Funny thing, apparently everyone, everywhere, likes food on a stick.

Cucumbers on a stick

This is one of the floats. There are people in the top playing music with flutes and drums.

Heart shaped eggs

Probably fish of some kind

Just off one street, a little shrine for something, I forgot what

Lots of yukatta, the summer kimono-style robe

This vendor had two kinds of ice cream, roasted green tea and green tea powder.

The next morning we went back to the train station to go watch the parade and then head to Narra. These guys were waiting for a train also. They are archery students, and they appeared to all be teen-agers.

We got to a street along the parade route.

Once again, people everywhere

Here comes a float

The float is on wheels. In the old days, the float was carried all over town. Now it is rolled. It was rather hot that day, maybe 95 f. Nothing compared to Tulsa.
